Reading

Classroom Reading Inventory (Tenth Edition), 2004
Nicholas J. Silvaroli and Warren H. Wheelock

Unlike the norm-referenced standardized tests children take at school, the Classroom Reading Inventory is an informal reading test which allows the examiner to determine a child’s reading achievement qualitatively as well as quantitatively. Both word recognition and comprehension are assessed, and specific areas of weakness are identified.

Grades 2-6

Depending on the child’s grade level, the test requires 1-2.5 hours to administer.

Math

CES Math Diagnostic

A teacher-made test, the math diagnostic assesses achievement and concept mastery and estimates conceptual grasp.

Grades 2-6

Depending on the child’s grade level, the test requires 1-2 hours to administer.

Writing

Writing Samples Evaluation

Created by Cribstone Educational Services, the WSE uses the child’s creative writing to qualitatively assess spelling, syntax, semantics, and grammar competency. Also assessed are writing fluency and paragraph development.

Grades 2-8

Depending on the child’s grade level, the test requires 20-50 minutes to administer.

The tests offered by CES can be taken separately or as a battery. Within two weeks of the final testing session, parents receive a written report that details the test results, the examiner’s interpretation of the results, and her recommendations. A 45-minute follow-up meeting is scheduled with the parents to go over the test results in detail, to answer questions, and to elaborate on the recommendations. A suggested reading list accompanies the Classroom Reading Inventory report.
