Literature Groups
| |
|
CES literature groups are designed to supplement public school reading programs. They provide enrichment for students in grades 2-6 who would benefit from in-depth studies of high-quality children’s literature selections. Featuring award-winning novels, each unit focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and the writing process. During group sessions, children read silently and orally and discuss what they are reading with the teacher and each other. Discussion centers around critical reading skills such as making inferences, predicting outcomes, and drawing conclusions. There is a strong emphasis on acquiring and using an excellent vocabulary. |

Throughout a unit, group members enjoy literature-based activities such as readers’ theater, making costumes, creating crossword puzzles and board games, and working with a variety of arts and crafts materials. They write narratives, character sketches, diary entries, scripts for radio shows, plays, and poetry.
